Michael Bertty brings 30 years of EEO/ADR experience to Philip Berry Associates LLC in his role as Vice President of Dispute Resolution. He is widely recognized as an expert in the field of EEO Law and Mediation practices. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association ADR Committees.
Before joining Philip Berry Associates LLC, Michael served as the ADR Director in the New York District Office of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for the Northeast Region. In this capacity he managed a large staff, as well as oversaw mediations for over 4,000 cases during his tenure. Michael has trained and certified a cadre of mediators who now serve as contractors and pro bono mediators for the EEOC. In his position, he was recognized as a national leader in ADR and was called upon to serve as an Expert Witness for the EEOC at the National level. Michael is a repeat recipient of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Director’s Award for ADR program performance, as well as a recipient of a Congressional Award for outstanding contributions in the field of ADR.
Michael currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the U.S. Federal Executive Board’s Shared Neutral Program, which facilitates mediations of Federal sector employment cases. Michael is also a member of the New Jersey State Employer’s Diversity Council which is a major source of information for employers in New Jersey. He has also served as a member of the U.S. Civil Rights Round Table, comprised of senior managers from the U.S. Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Education and the EEOC. This organization provides educational outreach and technical assistance to employees and employers nationwide.
Michael is a professor at NYU Robert F. Wagner, Graduate School of Public Service, Cornell University, School of Industrial & Labor Relations and New York Institute of Technology, where he teaches principles and concepts of Mediation, EEO Law, Labor Relations, Management courses and Human Resource related courses.
Michael has served as a member of the Attorney Ethics Committee for Bergen County in the State of New Jersey, a Mediator for the Superior Court of New Jersey, as well as a Scout Master and Executive Board member for the Boy Scouts of America.
Michael holds a BA in Sociology and Education from City College of New York, and a MA in Guidance and Counseling form the City College of New York, where he graduated with honors and is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honors Society. He is also a graduate of the Harvard University Mediation program.
